What a luer lock syringe does

A luer lock syringe has a threaded collar around the tip. A needle, blunt dispensing tip, filter or tubing adapter twists into that thread and is held mechanically, so the connection cannot slip off when you press the plunger hard. That secure fitting prevents leaks and accidental disconnection, which is why luer lock tips are the standard for dispensing glue, epoxy and flux, for pushing liquid through filters, and for any lab work where pressure builds at the joint.

A luer slip syringe, by contrast, holds the fitting only by friction on a smooth taper. It is quicker to attach and fine for open dispensing, but a stiff liquid or a sudden push can pop the fitting off. If you plan to attach anything to the tip, choose luer lock.

Sizes and packs

Foosi luer lock syringes come in 1 mL for fine dosing, 5 mL for general dispensing and 20 mL for volume through tubing. Each pack holds 30 syringes, individually sealed and sterile, made from industrial-grade polypropylene with a close-fitting plunger and clear fixed scales. They are sold for industrial, lab and hobby use; the syringes come without needles.

Luer slip vs luer lock at a glance

The difference between the two is the form of the tip. A luer slip syringe has a plain taper and relies on friction; a luer lock syringe adds a threaded collar that screws into the female luer fitting of a needle, tip or adapter. Twisted on tightly, the secure connection prevents accidental removal and the leaks that come with it, which is why laboratory instruments and common dispensing systems use the luer fitting across so many applications.

Choose luer lock syringes when your work will require pressure: thick fluid, a fine needle or a long tube. For general open dispensing a luer slip syringe is enough.

Design and performance

The Foosi design keeps dead space small, the barrel transparent and the plunger smooth, so the volume you read is the volume you push. That dependable performance makes them useful for medical-style lab practice and teaching, though Foosi sells them for industrial and hobby purpose only and not for injection. A variety of sizes, 1, 5 and 20 mL, covers small and large volume jobs; complete your purchase on the partner store page.

Luer Lock Syringes: questions

What is a luer lock syringe used for?

Attaching dispensing tips, filters, tubing or needles securely, so the fitting stays on under pressure.

What is the difference between a luer lock and a normal syringe?

A normal (luer slip) syringe holds fittings by friction; a luer lock syringe screws them on with a thread.

Why is it called luer lock?

The luer taper is a standard connection named after the instrument maker Hermann Wülfing Luer; the lock version adds a thread to the taper.

Are luer lock syringes reusable?

They are sold as disposable. For non-food liquids many users rinse and reuse a barrel for the same substance.
